Advancing the Abolitionist Agenda in Latin America
On August 11, 2025, more than 300 women from 11 countries and 40 Mexican collectives gathered at Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies for the Alternate Feminist Forum, held in parallel with the XVI Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean. While the official conference, convened by ECLAC and UN Women, excluded abolitionist voices, the Forum created a platform for survivors, feminists, and allies to speak out against prostitution, reproductive exploitation, and gender as systems of oppression.
Claudia Yurley Quintero Rolón’s participation
Claudia represented Space International at the Forum, where she delivered interventions and engaged in strategic advocacy:
-
On prostitution and the care society
Claudia declared, “Prostitution does not build a care society—it destroys it,” exposing the contradiction between the conference’s stated goals and the ongoing exploitation of women in prostitution systems. -
On the lack of exit programs
Sharing her testimony as a survivor of prostitution and trafficking, Claudia highlighted the urgent need for fully funded national exit programs across Latin America. She underscored how the absence of such programs leaves women trapped in cycles of violence and exploitation. -
Strategic alliances
Claudia met with representatives from ECLAC, UN Women, and FAO to raise concerns about exclusion and plurality; built connections with Mexican legislators who pledged to advance abolitionist proposals; and strengthened networks with activists, survivors, and regional leaders. She also received the support of Colombian journalist and survivor Jineth Bedoya Lima, joining the Management Committee for the implementation of her Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruling.
Outcomes
Claudia’s interventions received coverage in El Sol de México and SemMéxico, amplifying abolitionist perspectives to wider audiences. The Forum concluded with a call to build a Latin American Abolitionist Movement and a Regional Survivors’ Council, setting the stage for coordinated advocacy across the region.
