Standing with Arab Women in their Fight Against Sexual Exploitation

Share

One year ago, SPACE International, represented by its Director Cherie Jimenez, proudly supported the first international conference on prostitution ever held in the Arab world, titled “Prostitution as Male Violence Against Women.” The conference took place in Beirut, Lebanon, on July 9–10, 2024, and was organized by DoubleX, a newly established Arab organization dedicated to abolishing the systems of prostitution and pornography.

The event brought together survivors of prostitution, advocates, and speakers from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Nigeria, the United States, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and France. Together, they examined the global prostitution system—its roots, structures, perpetrators, and devastating effects on women and society. The conference also explored the impact of different legal frameworks and outlined concrete steps for resisting and dismantling sexual exploitation.
A powerful keynote dialogue featured Ms. Reem Al-Salem, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, highlighting key findings from her groundbreaking report on prostitution.

We send a strong message of solidarity to our sisters in the Arab world, who continue to stand with and support women in prostitution—often in the face of increasing wars, repression, and deep international injustice.
